inspired from this video and do read before making opinions:
What is the video about?
Eggie, run by Jenn Im, recently released a collection for their holiday and they have received backlash afterwards. She addresses the issue and talks about what changes she's making towards creating a better brand and branding for Eggie. She mentioned sweatshops, sustainability and many more. Do watch the video beforehand, yeah?
Anyways,
I'm glad that Jenn Im is taking an opportunity to do more than just putting out trendy clothes for her viewers and her consumers. It's just that she is doing this after the backlash. The backlash was really bad but there were some constructive ones. But she's making changes to have a better version of Eggie and that's already more than enough.
So, I was somehow inspired by Jenn's video and decided why not write about this.
Real talk.
What I want to talk about is this:
Are fashion brands today making clothes for themselves or for their customers?
Brands that just started, it is indeed difficult for them to make clothes for their customers since they do not have a concrete customers' profile or segmentation. However, they should know who they are aiming for and abide to it. It is a pity that brands nowadays, especially brands that are by influencers or popular people who come out with clothes and accessories, are making clothes for themselves and not for their consumers.
As a brand, it is not wonderful to release something that you (designer) can wear but more of what the customers can wear and their preference. It is indeed your brand and your name placed on it but you have to take considerations that your customers are the one who is going to market it to their friends and wear it on a daily basis and probably wear it more than you do.
I mean, Coco Chanel did designers clothes that she would only wear and there are still people buying at that point of time.
I know it's trend and I know they are influencers.
But you have to think about the customers' preferences, disposable income and their age. Basically their target market. Indeed there are people out there who looks up to you for fashion inspiration or just you being an inspiration but you have to think that it's you vs the thousands of other people. But you are you and there aren't thousands of you. Wouldn't that be creepy? Lmao.
I don't know but it's so upsetting how people expect they themselves to sell the clothes. That's a lot of burden and a lot of miracles. When no one buys or the quota doesn't hit through marketing, they will ask millions questions when in fact, they are targeting wrongly.
But what to do. It's their choices.
Another statement.
People are just creating garments that are expensive and calling it 'affordable'.
But that part, I'll write it on another post because that has lots of pointers all to itself.
That's all for this short talk which I randomly had a thought of after watching that video.
Have a wonderful week.
Love, Amani.
